Curator’s Comment:

A delicate watercolor, this piece could easily be overlooked despite its superb handling of sensitive wash and shadow.  The shy tilt of the figure’s head is vaguely deferential in contrast to the more relatively bold pronouncement of “visitor” status.  I wonder if the intent of including the tag was to indicate the presence of an outsider.  Whether interloper or inviter guest, the gesture is decidedly of meek resignation. Because your other related works lack a similar graphic device, I assume the black bar along the right edge of the piece is purely an accident of cropping and presentation.  But the more I look at the painting the more I appreciate it as part of the expression.  It provides a steady contrast to the faint, humanistic feel of the figure, both acting as boundary and barrier.  The black color echoes the figure’s hair and text, creating a triadic tension of disparate but formally related elements.  It looks like it’s been a while since you last posted images, but these works leave me wanting to see more.
