Curator’s Comment:

It’s remarkable to contemplate the layered aesthetics of Pothole Flags. The photograph shares a lush attention to unassuming mud puddles with the works entitled Swamp Water Textures and The Lovers.  But of course the former works have a visceral and organic warmth, whereas the subject matter captured inside this piece is much more specific, and potentially loaded with content. The rough rocky edges of the pothole are an interesting foil to the crisp image of the flags, suggesting a gateway window into another time or space rather than a simple reflection of sky. The transition of the flags flying versus folded up adds another contrasting aspect to the piece.  The repetition suggests transition of time or dissolution of the patriotic state.  But that could be a conceptual stretch unintended in the work.  A purely formal reading instead emphasizes the window within the photographer’s window; the gaze turned inward to the reflective lens itself.
