Curator’s Comments:
Layered Bluffs VII was created many year ago, but it’s refreshing to come upon it on the site. The subtle fluctuations in color and value suggest a patina on the surface of what looks like a skin of bleached leather. I enjoy the thin semicircular arc that sweep across the perimeter, calling attention to the deckled edges, as well as providing geometric contrast to the organic shapes. The more faint triangular and rectangular shapes within the larger piece further break down the quiet field of modulated color. While the piece is labeled as mixed media, I am curious if this is artist made paper, because of the irregular size and shape of the support. If so, the decision making process of layered shapes may be embedded in the work, rather than applied after its formation. Like Layered Bluffs IX, this composition in the series of related works appears sculptural as well as two-dimensional.
