Curator’s Comments:

In to the forest is a beautifully haunting painting, capturing the dramatic sensory experience of being on the edge of an unaffected wooded area.   The lone figure is alert, and directly confronts our gaze.  For me this diminishes the melancholy mood otherwise created by the pervasive somber yellow- green and black hues.  I appreciate the dark grass line coming up to and extending out from the figure, both supporting and obscuring his presence. The atmospherically hazy background softens the harsher contrast in the foreground, and suggests a misty cloud cover.  I also enjoy the strong diagonal shift of space in the composition, which leaves the left side light and open to the viewer. The brushy abstraction of the forest formally counters the specificity of the human presence. Looking back through your other works, I was reminded of the pieces I admired some time back that employ a starker figure-ground relationship. While there is an elegance to that severity of space, I was rewarded for another, longer viewing of In to the forest.
