Economy Class

Posted on August 28, 2010 at 10:00pm 0 Comments

Here is a sketch of my next piece. I call it Economy Class.

The poor guy in the middle is being squashed by the hip hop dude playing his DS on his right and the overweight hot chiquita on his left. A little kid sitting in the seats behind him sticks his sucker in the guys hair (of course the parents gave the kid the sucker to help with the pressure on his ears at take off and landing so he wouldn't scream like a banshee), and the stewardess delivering drinks to the weary travellers is…

Alison,
Your idea about answering alot of open calls is one way of getting yourself out there. Remember this could be a full time job. I work full time .But my job is so flexible that it works for my art work.
I joined as many local art groups as possible. Then weeded out the ones that I did'nt really fit in to. That is so important when looking for a gallery , where do you fit in? I certainly do not fit into a gallery that sells landscapes for example. I got my first gallery representation by answering a open call for their first juried show. From that relationship I met so many artists and have been involed with alot of projects with those artists.I am lucky with this group of artists because they share with ieach other. We started our own gallery since the original gallery is now closed. I live right out side NYC . Now that's the market that I am trying to break in to. Tough nut to crack. Especially in this economy.
Try to go to as many gallery opening receptions as you can . That's how I built a relationship with a gallery that I will be showing in next year. Alot to think about. Good luck . Let me know how things go.

Hi Alison,
Oh my goodness! A dancer (I would be excited and scared, too) and a chef? When do you find time to work?
I hope you have a wonderful trip and I will try to keep you posted about the Mastermind Discussion.
Take care, Cyndy

Thank you for your kind comment on my work... in replying I discovered that it takes me to your page. (I'll learn how this thing works yet...) Wow! Your work is some of the happiest and most light hearted I've seen in a long time! It looks like you have a lot of fun doing it! If one of your goals is to make people smile, you sure achieve it in a big way! Keep up the good work! -Kelly-

Hello Alison,
I am really new at this Mastermind Discussion group. I will post a note to the Take It To The Next Level group describing what to do next, if you can watch for it, that would be great. If you can't, the current plan is to meet the 3rd Monday of each month at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time, so just send me an email and I will forward info to you. I hope your out-of-town trip is for fun. Your work is whimsical and made me chuckle. If your paintings are not 3-D, they sure look they are and I love your color palette.
Hope to hear from you again.
Take care, Cyndy

Hi Alison, good to connect with you. I work in mixed-media with a main focus on glass. Most of my work with glass is in kiln-forming. I also use metal, wood and stone in combination with the glass.

I think your images would be perfect in book form-childrens, comics or adult humor. I think it would be a wonderful venue for you to get yourself "out there." But in the same ssense, I have not sold nor tried to sell any works! I might not be the best opinion to get! Ha! I do think it would make for very attractive illustrations though! At 37, I still love picture books.

I will sometimes go months-YEARS even once-without painting, then I get on a streak where I go nonstop. If I try to force it, nothing good comes from it. I have an 8-yr old daughter who is showing interest but it usually means I don't get much of my own painting done for helping with hers!

your sculptures are so joyful and humorous! I have NO talent with sculpting! I tried once in high scool and I didnt even save it it was so awful! Flat surfaces are definitely easier for me to deal with! What a wonderful talent!

Hi Alison, I see your work for kids books. Have you ever approached children book publishers? They are delightful.

Send me your email and I will send you something that I wrote this week for some of my friends who are trying to learn. I am always learning more each day, but there are things to be aware of when using twitter so you do not get deleted from peoples tweeps etc. this is my email: catherinefoster@mac.com put in the subject that you are from this group so you do not get deleted. I get a lot of email every day. So fun to get to know you, catherine
