National Deadline: June 15, 2105 – The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is pleased to announce its 2015 juried fine art competition, A Sense of Place. Open to participants from throughout the United States, this thirty-fifth annual event seeks to recognize the outstanding quality and diversity of work being generated by contemporary American artists.
JUROR: ANNETTE CONE-SKELTON
Annette Cone-Skelton is the Co-Founder/President/CEO/ Director of The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA). Under her leadership, MOCA GA has become a vital part of the cultural community of the state since its founding in 2000. In addition, Cone-Skelton has over thirty years of experience as an exhibiting artist, fine arts instructor, curator, editor, and owner of a fine arts advisory firm. She holds a B.F.A. from the Atlanta College of Art, and in 2006-2007 was honored as an Outstanding Alumni of LaGrange College.
Three cash prizes will be given, including a $750 Best of Show Award and two $500 Juror’s Awards. At the juror’s discretion, additional noncash Honorable Mention awards may also be presented. Award recipients will be announced on Friday, September 11, 2015, at the opening reception for A Sense of Place.
The 2015 juried fine art competition is open to all US artists age 18 and older. All works must be original, not previously exhibited at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art, and completed on or after June 1, 2013. Work that predates this cut-off date will not be considered.
Entries in the following media will be accepted: painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. Film and video pieces are ineligible. Entries are not judged in media categories.
All entries must be submitted online. The fee is $37 which allows each artist to enter up to three works; additional works may be submitted at a cost of $10 each.
DELIVERY AND RETURN OF WORK
All work accepted for exhibition must be delivered by hand or carrier no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2015. All artwork is to be picked up or shipped between October 19–23, 2015. Artists are responsible for the cost of initial delivery and return shipment.
LIABILITY AND INSURANCE
The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art will provide insurance coverage for artwork while on its premises for exhibition purposes. Insurance coverage for artwork while in transit to and from GHIA is the responsibility of the artist.
A 35% gallery commission will be charged on sales of all exhibited artwork.

Founded in 1937 and housed in the historic Nicholas Ware mansion (c. 1818), the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is Augusta’s only independent nonprofit visual arts school and contemporary art gallery. The Institute serves as a showcase for regional, national, and international artists, offering rotating exhibitions of outstanding contemporary artwork year-round.
