SUMMARY:Over the Edge: Paperworks Unbound
DESCRIPTION:International Deadline: September 26, 2014 - Throughout hu
man history, paper has been essential in countless developments that h
ave transformed the way we think, live, and act. Paper as we know it t
oday originated in China over 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty (
206 BC - 220 AD). The ancient Silk Road eventually brought paper to th
e West, where it was quickly adopted and widely used. Since its genesi
s, paper has been valued for its relatively easy, cost-effective produ
ction and functional versatility.\nIn 1453, Johann Gutenberg invented
the first printing press in Germany - an innovation that revolutionize
d the spread of information and initiated a proliferation of literacy
and scholarship.\nFor centuries, printed publications such as books, n
ewspapers, magazines, flyers and pamphlets were the primary sources fo
r information and communication. In recent years, however, these print
ed publications are becoming obsolete as we increasingly rely on digit
al platforms. In addition to this paradigm shift, environmental concer
ns are cited as reason to abandon published print and reduce paper pro
ducts in favor of a more eco-friendly digital alternative.\nArtists wh
o use paper as the primary medium for their artworks defy the mainstre
am understanding of books as antiquated artifacts and paper as a cheap
, disposable commodity. These materials are used as points of departur
e for infinite creative possibilities achieved through drawing, painti
ng, cutting, carving, printing, folding, sculpting, and assembling art
that highlights the universality of paper.\nThe WAH Center presents \
"Over The Edge: Paperworks Unbound\" - a group art exhibition explorin
g the many artistic usages of paper and how paper has the ability to c
onnect people of all different backgrounds. Artists are encouraged to
 submit both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works:\n\n2-D works
may include: printmaking (woodcut, engraving, etching, mezzotint, aqua
tint, drypoint, lithography, serigraphy, monoprint); illustration; dra
 wing; photography; watercolor; etc.\n3-D works may include: sculpture;
installations: papier-mache; architectural models; industrial design
projects; origami; etc.\n\nIn this spirit, our open call provides an o
pportunity for outstanding artists to showcase work to new audiences i
n the prominent art community of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York, and
to national and international visitors.\nCo-curated by Yuko Nii & Reb
ecca Cuomo. Show Dates: Saturday, October 25 - Sunday, November 23, 20
14\nWe are now accepting submissions for the \"Over The Edge: Paperwor
ks Unbound\" show. ELIGIBILITY Artists worldwide, working on/with pap
