I am a student who is studying illustration. My joy in life is creating cartoons and comic books but I find that many other students at my school find it immature, boring, and just plain stupid. I was wondering what other artist's thought about this and what their stance was on the cartoon. I fully believe that cartoons are art and should be celebrated just like any other form of art.

Cartoons are a great way to get ideas and or stories across. Even better if the cartoonist can draw well.

When starting out I would suggest some art education in the related field. That way you can get contacts for work etc. You can also, through art education, develop your abilities far more and quicker than if you were to wing it on your own. This is only my opinion because I too started out like you. Only that in my country there was no scope for cartoonists and comic books, which meant that it took many years before getting work and the jobs were few and far between. In Europe and the USA there are more opportunities with this regard (so I am told) But one important criteria would be excellent drawing and story boarding skills.
