I find it was the absence of the flesh that eluded me within some of the other galleries. A lack of humaness?

I remember getting a glimpse of Spirit of the Dead Watching through that huge crowd. I've been able to see it at the Art Institute again last year (fantastic show). Its overwhelming.

I made this painting in 2007, two years out of undergraduate school.

I used both tigers eye genuine and tigers eye burnt oil paints together.

I wanted it to be powerful.

Is it strong?

Hi any and all who care to comment! I've been working and reworking this painting for a little while. I thought it was done, but I never really got that "OK this is finished" feeling from the piece. I do struggle with color, and I know its difficult to comment on abstract work, but any comments are welcome. Thank you for your time and thoughts :)…

The basis for these is that I am taking two colors, this case black and orange, and then trying to resolve them using my arsenal of mark-making and abstraction. I plan to do a whole series of these and this is very preliminary. It is in acrylic and in a 11x14 sketchbook but I will do 36" x 48" oil paintings if these become successful. This is the first.
So that a teacher could tell me what's wrong. I enter competitions now and then: I entered 5 silk screen prints in a competition for a show curated by a graphic society that will be in a city art museum. I won't find out if I got in until March, but I look at my prints and am absolutely sure I have no chance of getting in.
