Thank you for the review! And as always, eloquently put. I love reading your insights on the other artists' works.
Curator’s Comment:
(Disclaimer: Morin is a painting student at Albright College, where I teach.)
While I appreciate the bold gestural qualities and mark making within your oil based monotypes, the mixed media watercolor Mutual Appreciation has an altogether different sensibility. The faint razor cut lines and interstices between the neighboring squares offer a pleasing pattern that could be pattern-based or completely intuitive. The repetitive lines form a loose, disjointed grid, and seem to brusquely record intervals of space or time. But with the pale coloration and contrast in edges, I feel it’s unexpectedly but beautifully nuanced. The alternately organic, almost discordant washes of pigment form diaphanous clouds and drips. Complementary yellow and violet hues form an opposing ying yang equilibrium, as a red-violet stain appears in the center of the allied yellow mass. It’s interesting that this is a collaborative work, as it could be interrupted as two voices syncopated within the space.
