Curator’s Comment:

I’m attracted to the reflective silkiness of the river’s surface in Big Hole. The suggestion of a void, implied by the title, does attest to the depth of the cobalt blue.  The small textural island of green in the top section moves the viewers’ eye up to the level of the horizon, but the real subject of the photograph is the deep blue pooling water itself.  The light doesn’t seem to be emitted from above, but vaguely glows from within the landscape.  This misty mirrored quality is also strongly present in Boulders, Lamar River.  While the massive boulder in this image echoes the shape and proportion of the island in the later piece, the centrality of its position asserts more permanence and stability, despite the suggestion of erosion over eons.  Both works also exert an interesting abstraction or distortion of their natural forms through smooth areas of still water.  The contrasting form emerges, and floats above the stillness.  The effect is surreal, and otherworldly.
