Curator’s Comments:

The abstract figuration Andante caught my eye due to the vibrancy of the hues and gestural expression.  I feel as though there may be a numerical symbolism in the grouping of yellow forms and triadic red-orange circles (fruits?) with their repeated “three-ness” in the scrawled linear leaf shapes adjacent to them on the right.  But the specific iconography remains mysterious. The strong horizon moving through the painting designates the blue top section as a possible illusion to the sky, with a less certain yellow-green middle ground and dark smudgy underground at the bottom of the picture.  The blackness formally anchors the movement of the figure on the left, which appears to be encroaching on the right. I like the overall stability the organization provides, while injecting tension into the grouping. I also see these objects as more opaque and solid than many of your other painterly forms, which lends an interesting density and impenetrable quality to the abstraction.
