Curator’s Comments: The piece entitled Song appears different upon each subsequent viewing. As with your other jeweled portraits, the ornamentation deftly carries the visual movement in the composition. I enjoy the multiple sinuous pathways in the space which are organic in nature, but yet also create flat decorative pattern. The tree shapes anchor the branches and “fruit” motif, and yet I find other symbols more ambiguous. I see the bird as a strong focal element, and the figuration of the extended black and white lines suggesting emotive pathways or song. But as the primary subject of the painting, the bird is relatively small, making space for the even more fantastical surroundings.
