Curator’s Comments:

The Story Teller; When Dreams Come True is a wistful painting, combining elements of idyllic realism with fantasy. The larger physical scale of the piece indicated no doubt gives it a more commanding presence in person, but when viewed on screen there’s a certain intimacy in the close confidence of the storytellers.  I like the flattening of the foreground which occurs with the contrast of jewel toned red-violet and yellow, and the studied fossils tilting forward in the rich violet ground.   The flying figure hovering above them shares a strangely close proximity with the trio, and so the viewer wonders if she is (super) real or a figment of their collective imagination.   I think the later is actually the preferable read of the piece, as it acknowledges the power of storytelling. Visually I also recognize the value of the ballooning and parachuting figures tucked in the small areas left of open space, which offer a quilt like compartmentalization of the picture plane.  Rather than providing atmospheric perspective, they become emblematic of free floating ideas and a global fascination with human flight.  But while I understand your desire to share installation or publicity shots of your other pieces, I wish there were other straight pictures of your individual paintings so we could see the finer detail and color relationships.  Hopefully there’s more to come.
