Thanks K. I just finished some space paintings that this piece led me to.
Curator’s Comments:
Head in Space maintains the gorgeous chaos I’ve come to admire in your paintings and drawings. The visceral undulations of organic abstraction appear denser than the marks in your recent gestural works. The black ‘space’ formally provides a stabilizing boundary, containing the active designs. The color scheme also seems to organize to some degree- with cooler hues grounding the bottom and central axis of the figurative mass, and pale yellow radiating from the top of the ‘head’. While I interpret this painting as a non-objective piece, I appreciate the title’s reference to portraiture. Within the oeuvre of your gestural abstractions, the piece does decidedly exhibit a figure-ground relationship. Scale and media aren’t identified, but I imagine painting has an imposing psychology because of the slightly downturned nature of the shape, and tremendous visual commotion. It contains an irresistible turmoil.
