Abstract paintings

It’s interesting to ponder the relationships between the instruments in your portfolio and the abstract and colorful mixed media works on paper.  While there is a clear and galvanizing conceptual rapport between music and lyrical drawing, the sculptural pieces are aesthetically understood to be more controlled (and arguably less personally expressive) functional objects.  At least a portion of the artist’s hand is removed by nature of the craft involved, notwithstanding choices of color and design. Certainly some of the wood construction reveals substantial creativity and transformation through deviation from tradition- especially Octoguitar and Assault Guitar. But of the abstract drawings, I’m especially attracted to this image, which contains internal open space, as the linear forms loop back onto themselves. The heavier dark lines and areas of contrast take place in the upper portion of the piece, nicely suspending the implied visual weight.  I like that there is both a delicacy to the organic formations, and an assertive and almost aggressive reiteration of the curving lines elsewhere in the space. I also appreciate the hierarchy of scale, from a large focal shape to descending shapes of similar character.
