Happy Easter to those who celebrate.  The title of this 2014 mixed media piece After Easter, No Chocolate, attracted my attention today, and looking more closely I’m intrigued by the bold and realistically rendered striped tulip splayed along the bottom of the composition. The flower appears to be an outlier among the myriad non-objective geometric and organic shapes zig-zagging through the composition.  Because of the smoothness of the forms, and integration of disparate elements I had imagined this as a digital collage rather than a collage process using traditional media.  The large scale of the canvas no doubt allows the viewer a certain entrance into a spatial environment, rather than a small pictorial window.  Interestingly, the painting contains structural elements on the sides and top left that function as a loose frame.  This playful ambiguity between the figures and ground result in expressive movement and visual complexity.  I do hope you’re furthering your practice in mixed media, and hope you will consider posting new work.
