Curator’s Comment:
Attraction seems like a painting for painters. I am very attracted to the forthright painterly application of pigment, and I particularly enjoy the edgier tension in this piece. The red shape, slightly amorphous but forceful nonetheless, pushes into the darker diagonal, creating a more saturated edge. This point of contact creates an appealing pressure, or apprehensive conflict. The pure psychology of form and color come together in a beautiful friction. Your other pieces on the site seem to exhibit more of a color field approach to the figure/ground relationship. They contain a similar muscular confidence, but without the discordant opposition I enjoy so much in this piece. I’m sure the scale of all of these works enhances their inherent monumentality, and viewing them on a small scene is a less than ideal substitute.
