Bob Marley - Spiritual Warrior
Brazilian Agate, (head, nose, and mouth) bone, amber, malachite, red and black coral, smoky quartz, garnet, orange clay quarts (chin), Jadeite, camel teeth and sterling.
Bob Marley was the first Jamaican artist to achieve international super stardom, introducing the music of his native island nation to the far-flung corners of the globe. Marley’s music gave voice to the day-to-day struggles of the Jamaican experience. He vividly captured not only the plight of the country’s impoverished and oppress but also the devout spiritually, which remains their source of strength. His songs of faith, devotion and revolution created a legacy which continues to live through music of his extended family and generations of artist’s. The world has been touched by his genius. Robert Nesta Marley was born February 6, 1945 in rural St. Ann’s Parish, Jamaica – he died May 11, 1981 at too early of an age of 36.
As great as Marley’s fame had grown outside Jamaica, at home he was viewed as a figure of almost mystic proportions, a poet and prophet who’s every word had the nation’s collective ear. His power was perceived as a threat to some. An assassination attempt wounded Marley on December 3, 1976, the ordeal forced Marley to leave Jamaica for a year. In 1977 Exodus was his biggest record to date, generating the hits “Jammin”, “Waiting in Vain”, and “One Love/ People Get Ready”.
When I first got the idea (way back when) to create counter-cultures masks hero’s of mine. Bob Marley was at the top of my list. But strangely enough I didn’t complete Bob until I was at my 86th sculptured mask. Being influenced with a solid week of nothing but live Bob Marley CD’s and lifetime of admiration for the spiritual immortal warrior I started into Bob’s mask.
Day one, I created all the small pieces to the puzzle (eyes, noses, mouth, spleef, lions with garnet and lion with Rasta colors. Day two, played around moving all these new small puzzles pieces into and out of place. By day three, it was go time; I had the Marley spirit in me to complete this amazing 3 –dimensional, translucent depth inspiring work.
Sterling a little Reggae and Bob in natural sunlight might actually make you feel like “JAMMIN”!
