Curator’s Comments:

Created over a decade ago, Dynasty appeared in a random selection on the site today.  I admired its smooth stylized gradation of value and economic form, and found myself contemplating the unusual distribution of space.  While the dark brown and white configurations suggest letter characters, they’re not familiar to me.  Other elements reference Japanese style, such as the fan, which I originally read as a clock, and the conspicuously small red encapsulated designs in the lower left, which resemble ukiyoe chops. Assuming I’m looking at a digital print rather than relief printmaking, the image clearly borrows from those historical traditions. Even without thinking about the partially splayed fan as a cropped clock face, the piece suggests the passage of time through repetition and interruption of that pattern.  This balance between order and chaos provides visual harmony, and enough variety of form to keep the viewer engaged.  I do hope you check back in on the site, and show us how your practice has progressed.
