Curator’s Comment:

Avril’s relaxed overlapping and sprawling pose seems particularly well suited to your gestural handling of the watercolor medium.  The more ‘accidental’ or ancillary drips and starts also provide a nice animated contrast to the more solid and static manipulation of form.  The rosy solidity of the figure’s flesh is further complemented by the looser brushstrokes in her clothes and hair.  It’s as if she’s slightly shifting while occupying the same space.  The orange and blue-violet warm/cool split complementary hues sets up a rather dynamic relationship for a piece within the dominion of local color; particularly when keeping the environment neutral.  I also like that some of the empty white of the paper flows into her lower torso, pushing her back in space while her contrasting shoes move back to the front of the picture plane.  I’m equally drawn to the way the figure sits in the picture plane in the painting entitled La Dormiente. Languid and vaguely voyeuristic, the sleeping figure’s warm flesh tones nicely set off the cooler blue flow of fabric and garments.  The slightly titled diagonal of the incline and patterned bedding provide unexpected graphic direction.  The piece is beautifully balanced between sensitivity and strength.
