Cut Paper - mounted and framed

Curator’s Comment:
These are intriguing, delicate works. I like the abstraction and deconstruction of the subjects through the cutting of the decorative interior motifs. The variation in linear measure evokes calligraphic movement. Inverse shape relationships created between Bat and Armor are also quite appealing, as both the larger forms and process in the body of work as a whole generates positive/negative interactions. They show much better online in the framed format, but I do appreciate the attempt to indicate dimension in the installation shots. The frames, if shadow boxed, could emphasis the image as object, especially in the suggestion of collected and mounted zoological specimens. I also imagine there are more possibilities for intricate cast shadow when you can manipulate ambient light. I wonder if you’ve seen Anna-Wili Highfield’s paper animal sculptures. The Sydney based artist creates images I think you’d really respond to, as they alternate rough torn versus cut edges, and flat planes among linear elements.
