A portrait of the early American naturalist William Bartram in his younger years. This image was created by referencing Charles Wilson Peale's portrait of Bartram (as a much older gentleman). In the background is the Bartram family home which stands in Philadelphia to this day. Just beyond William are two distinctive varieties of plant that he is credited with propagating: the Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) and the Franklinia (Franklinia alatamaha).
