Curator’s Comments:

I find Blue Dog to be an exceptionally expressive and somewhat idiosyncratic piece.   Part of its charm is in its distinctively erratic handling of space, and shaped overall support.  Seeming to fit within the contemporary genre of Neo-Expressionism, the painting also exhibits a seemingly personalized gestural and haptic sensibility.  (Maybe you’d agree your portfolio also offers references to American Primitivism? ) The opening to the severely angled house is particularly unexpected- the driveway opening up and spilling blue pigment across, and down the far left side of the picture plane.  Rather than gain the viewer entry into an illusionistic architecture, the perspective tilts in such a way to deny a pictorial horizon or ground.  I’m not sure what’s happening into the more abstracted right side of the piece, but the large white and red shapes align with the building structure, and balance the visual weight formally. This image holds my interest, and seems evidence of the benefit of breaking traditional rules.
