Curator’s Comments:
There’s a genuine sweetness to your bird paintings- capturing the delicacy of their bodies poised on precarious limbs. I’m especially attracted to this composition (062) because of the more asymmetric use of positive and negative space, and the suspension of visual weight. Pointing downward, the sparrow directs the movement downward only to be brought back up through the calligraphic lines of the twisting branches. The small orange berries provide nice pops of warm color, connecting with the bird and forming a complementary hue to the gradated sky/background. The smooth ground also provides visual rest to the active simulated textures elsewhere in the piece. The female cardinal painting (012) contains a similarly elegant balance between muted background tones and more atmospherically detailed warm textures in the foreground. While medium and scale aren’t identified, I imagine these works to be small in actual stature and intimate in viewing.
