Curator’s Comments:

Cage, from the Series about Absence is a wonderful drawing, offering whirling movement around a stationary central figure.  Looking back through your other works on the site, I see this charcoal drawing is your only achromatic piece, and while I view it as a finished work, in context I see it as a more stripped down conceptual rendering. The textural hatched marks and layering of imagery offers a rich visual experience, while the lighter value pattern and arrows suggest it’s a drawing about thinking.  It exudes an emotional vulnerability. The soft form trapped within the “cage “of the larger figure could be held captive, or just close to the heart. While the piece is chronologically included towards the end of your series on the site, it is as if the work is a precursor to the darker paintings with rich sepia and red tones. The direct drawing medium may have moved towards this reading, but the work may also offer the viewer a window into your process.
