Curator’s Comments:
The viewer can’t help but smile at Cappello Pollo. The matter of fact portrait strikes an absurd friendliness in expression, without any attempt to integrate or conceptualize the juxtaposition between disparate human and animal faces. The second related portrait (Principessa Pollo) is only slightly more reverent; the woman’s serious expression in profile calls to mind a Native American portrait with an indigenous headdress. The velvety black backgrounds in both pieces suggest a common characteristic of formal studio portraiture, adding a further irony to the peculiar depictions. The black ground formally sets off dramatic contrast between the blood red c****’ combs and other fleshy hues. Both paintings actually demonstrate a clear and lush use of local color and painterly realism. I marvel at the stretch between your representational figurative pieces and organic abstractions. Some images pull quite far away from reality, such as the cellular titled works, but it occurs to me they could also be illustrations of the unseen and microscopic. Either way, the skilled representation seems to be in service of larger, universal or ironic truths.
