Curator’s Comment:

Bird Feeders (L) has a vital, rhythmic quality- I’m partial to the heavy black calligraphic markings across the pale green field.  I also find the color especially engaging, as it sets off a contrasting figure-ground relationship.  There is an airy sense to the environment, as if lifted into the tree tops.  The abstraction of the linear elements is sinuous and flowing, leading my eye throughout the work in a slightly sporadic way.  The distribution of more visual weight in the top section contributes to the overarching feeling of physical space, while the connecting black lines suggest the bird’s trajectory. The linear, metrical patterning can be seen throughout many of your other works, but I respond to the hierarchy of form here.  Bird Feeders offers a stable visual rest within the brisk flight patterns of line, color and texture.  I imagine this work is digitally manipulated, as the smooth surface doesn’t reveal any typical media characteristics.   But regardless of process and subject, the piece principally seems to be about the pure act and love of drawing.
