Curator’s Comment:

There’s a pleasurable transient quality to Cartography of Persistence, in the small vignettes of map like drawings.   The transitory directional and pictorial markings within the grid are fleeting, and yet transmit and cultivate a vaguely instructional patois. The open repetition of shape and color help the viewer navigate through the space, while the darker, solid color blocks provide a welcome and random punctuation to the regularity of the pattern. While I also enjoy the more gestural approaches to a similar subject in your monoprints and other related works, I’m drawn to this particular series because of its very lack of individualism and expression.  I get the impression this piece is a methodical collection of ideas and passages culminating from an ongoing journey. The collection of many parts within the whole offers me the opportunity to slow down and contemplate the small spaces.  The yellow-orange lines contrast beautifully against the darker pools of blue and gray. I like it that some lines connect within the grid, while others trail off, pointing to emptiness.  Perhaps I don’t respond as strongly to the faster gestural movement of line/path as I’m not in a hurry to reach the final destination.
