Powerful in it's simplicity

(disclaimer: Miles in a known artist living in my hometown.)

Three Blue Birds (why my father cries) is a lyrical piece- a deceptively unaffected painting that resonates with a sense of place within a fixed, unchanging moment.  The geometry of the simple composition sharply divides the picture plane into explicit sections.  Unequal quadrants, the pieces are split between hard edges and reverberating shifts within darker bands of saturated color.  I particularly like the pulsing orange color along the diagonal “line” of the birds on a wire.  The shift in hue creates visual tension, but also slows down the sweeping movement of the line’s straight trajectory. Three small birds further act as a formal rift in the otherwise open space. Functioning as identifiable figurative elements, they inject an air of jovial play without ever descending into easy sentiment.  The Chess Board piece directly adjacent to Three Birds at first seems to hold an incongruent aesthetic or design from other works. More graphic than pictorial, the game board is clean and perfectly illustrated.  However, considering the vacillation between play and order, and imagining the conceptual play in progress, it possibly serves as metaphor for your art making practice.  I can apply this organizational-play exchange to your landscapes as well, which allows me to witness freshly discovered systematic arrangements in my otherwise fragmented environment.
