acrylic, silver leaf on canvas, 60"x 20", 2009

I'm enjoying the restraint of more minimal approaches in this series of canvases.

Chiaroscuro is minimal by comparison to your other works, but I observe a lot going on within the long rectangular sections.  The unequal verticals of space create an interesting tension, but to me they appear to have more formal dialogue about matte versus reflective surfacing than dark versus light. The thin thread of deeper blue pigment running between them and breaking at different points creates an interesting spatial interval.  I interpret it as a visual vibration, or other rhythmic interchange. The large scale of the actual painting must certainly accentuate the open expanse of silver leaf; acting as both open field and textural subject.  The more erratic scratches or interruptions appearing on the far right nicely balance the smooth and graduated blue on the far left.  The detail shot you provided also helps the viewer to see the surface is a layered composite of under and over painting, rather than a flat painterly manipulation. I hope you’ll post more of these works.
