Very cool sculpture! I would like to see about 30 of the chicken creatures (same size) on a metal sheet, or one about 6ft. The more you look at chicken creature it seems to pull you in visually, and the then gets your imagination spinning. Very creative, love the piece!
Chicken Creature is a blithe amalgamation of delighted whimsy and contorted metal. The loose gestural sensibility seems to challenge if not contradict the determined focus called for in welding steel. (This could be a biased assumption from someone who’s only entertained pitiful attempts at rudimentary welding.) And so I also interpret the diminutive size as a humorous poke at weighty sculpture; its bugging eyes discernibly constructed from stray nuts. I like the unexpected ropey openings in the small body as the piece maintains a gestural sensibility, while the tiny feet convey uneasy movement. It’s as if the bird is shifting slightly under its own uncertain weight. The adjacent image of the stylized garden gate with pod finials is an arguably more elegant piece, in a very different tradition. I’m attracted to its straightforward aesthetic that balances rustic naturalism/truth in materials with fluid rhythmic movement. The slight bending and crossing of the empty peapod forms nicely counters the straight verticality of the gate, implying organic growth and progression. The alternating joints additionally add sensory interest with integrated pattern. Thank you for sharing these works, and different approaches to your medium.
