Curator’s Comments:

This piece, Ocean Twins, came up randomly on the site for me today.  I’ve very attracted to the heavily textured, almost visceral application of collaged imagery layered onto the human forms. The comparatively pale and inactive background provides some visual rest from the complexity of the figural offerings.  I’m also captivated by the suggestion we are looking inside their torsos, through open, organic portals of space.  While none of the segments is particularly revealing in terms of the origins of the textures, the viewer can make out bits of coral and sea creatures.  The effect is to disembody the subjects as mere containers rather than living entities in themselves, but there is also the implication we are seeing a vast space, or inner workings inside the twins. It came as quite a surprise when I scrolled through your other pieces on the site.  I remember admiring some of your drawings and photographs in years past, but they now appear to have a much more restrained aesthetic. While pieces such as Photo 9, depicting a pinkish and eroded exterior wall, or Draw 3-07 celebrate subtle forms and colors, Ocean Twins revels in the more is more visual approach.
