Curator’s Comment:
This is a fabulous painting. I admire your painterly handling of slick wet surfaces, and the splendor of reflected light in many of your works. But this piece really reaches past those beautiful scenes. The title and subject- a pedicure in Paradise- is actually surprisingly devoid of tropical or exotic fauna in or outside the salon window. Your focus on the anonymous woman performing this service is brilliant. The point of view is that of customer/client, and yet the turned heads of the figures makes the arguably intimate experience even less personal. The shimmer of light on the shadowed figure, such as the glow of light in the figure’s hair and on the bottles, makes the ordinary sublime. I don’t know that you intended the viewer to read content about class and our service industry into this piece, but I do appreciate it on multiple levels.
