Curator’s Comments:

This drawing of geese is quite magical.   I see a classical, story book approach through the tondo, and reddish brown drawing media.  The dramatic distribution of space, allowing for the empty negative sky in the upper left, enhances the quality of physical engagement and flight.  The opposed birds appear to be in conflict, but the gentle curves of their bodies and the outside circular frame soften this effect.  I especially enjoy the cropping of sections of their bodies and wings, as legs appear to move just beyond the periphery of the picture plane. The dark hollows between them grounds the work, and creates pleasing contrast of value.  I didn’t realize at first they formed a massive recumbent skull.   This certainly adds a darker narrative to the image, while formally the shaded areas also nicely accentuate the delicacy of the lighter lines in the piece.  I appreciate the previous comment about the tenderness of life.  I do hope you consider posting more recent drawings on the site.

i really like how this skull is the landscape sagging and evolving as landscapes do. the exploring, curious birds add a potency for me and somehow a tenderness, life goes on...
