Curator’s Comment:
Bad Watermelon is a gratifying formal piece, with bold structural supports set up against juicy color. I like the exploration of synchronized ‘random’ or gestural, haptic elements along with the more regular beat of the hand painted black boxes. The “stick” shapes inject very subtle humor into the piece, harkening back to summer popsicles and the ubiquitous discarded stick. The painterly irregularity of the reddish pink ground is especially satisfying. Allowing for faint visual shifts in value and texture, the painting offers a really bold assertion of saturated hot color. I also think it’s interesting to see the range of works you have on the site, from more minimal sculptural forms to more aggressive painting with raw elements of text and graffiti. Perhaps there is an overriding conceptual concern with order and chaos in your artistic practice. I personally enjoy the pieces that teeter on that edge.
