Curator’s Comments: 

 

Jungle Boots Escalator is a pristinely cool object of mechanical beauty and of intangible horror.  The title in the context of the weapon and legos denotes a relationship between unspecified antagonism and computational militaristic strategy.  I also think of wars by proxy and guerilla tactics without ties to a particular jungle region or political ideology.  The white legos provide poignant formal contrast to the shiny sculpture, as the individual bricks blur into the summation of a solid white column.  White bricks suggest stacked commodity; sugar and drugs, or possibly cultural/racial whiteness.  There’s nothing didactic in the way of moralizing the juxtaposition of the gun and toys.  But their raw capability and familiarity arrests the viewer and demands studied deliberation.
