Thank you for the thoughtful commentary. I really enjoyed your perspective and found it useful as I ponder the "next generation" of the series.

Curator’s Comment:

The single scene narratives and ominous voice of reason in these pieces are reminiscent of Ida Applebroog or even Barbara Kruger, but they’re also highly unique. Using a needle craft medium makes the imagery more homey and approachable, as if I’m viewing a stitched sampler made by a close relative.  But the craft association may possibly have a more biting edge, as it was reclaimed and cultivated as a fine art medium by first wave, and even second wave feminist artists.   The muted tonality and linear variation keeps the voice in the pieces quiet, conveying what appear to be the private thoughts of the subjects.  The dotted line also makes the viewer aware of the slow tedium of hand stitching- the time it could have taken to complete the works almost contradicts the frozen snapshot aspect to the poses The figures demeanors are decidedly ‘caught’ as opposed to posed or constructed. Formally, the control of thinner and thicker dashes pushes the spatial illusion of the figure/ground relationship.  Makeout is especially humorous in the obvious groping, but slight ambivalence; the emphasis on “Doesn’t always” in the text.  The subtle shading such as the highlight and shadow in the female figure’s hair is also quite remarkable.  These are technically and conceptual very smart works.  I’m not quite sure what the small shape in the upper left corner is depicting- it looks like a “thumbs up” sign, designating “like”.  While it may lead the eye visually, I don’t know that an icon is needed to indicate a shared or public disclosure.  The questionable privacy of the thought could hold more potency.  But then again I could just be showing my age….. (Privacy, what’s that?)
