Curator’s Comment:
The small actual scale of the piece entitled Emilio no doubt adds to the intimacy of the portrait. The swiftness in the gesture is also supported by the short descriptive text about process that accompanies the painting. I’m attracted to the way in which the essential characteristics were captured; the decorative and colorful embellishments around the subject’s collar are as if not more pronounced than his facial features. Shadows are skillfully articulated as slightly contrasting pools of deeper color or darker tonality. But rather than reducing the subject into simple caricature or generality, the economy of line produces an honest and direct appearance, just as he dissolves into the watercolor media on the page.
