Curator’s Comment:

These images are haunting as they suggest the ravages of nature and time in a dramatic fashion, such as the presence of the swiftly moving sky in Farm # 6, or a slower, more insidious devastation over time, as in School House # 1. But I’m most interested in the pieces which blur the distinction between abandonment and working farms. Farm # 15 for instance contains elements of desolation, from the absence of human presence or activity such as bailed hay.  The gray tones possess a subtle luminosity, whether from intention or process, slightly softening the contrast of value.  Cylindrical forms repeat compositionally, and help roll the viewers ‘eye over the image, while the sheer verticality of the silo keeps the piece from appearing soporific.  The overall effect may also be to slightly romanticize the subject- they are of the moment, and yet timeless and still.
