Curator’s Comments:
Bull and Woman caught my eye with iconic references to Chagall’s acrobats and Picasso’s Bulls….and yet the circus theme easily fits into your personal stylistic abstraction of animal forms. The signature high chroma, saturated hues are kept in tenuous balance here, as there’s a distinguishable foreground, middle ground and background. The agitated and gestural line work moving throughout the piece ties together the drawing in an expressionistic scene. What appears to be a female figure in the ring on the far left is the most human subject, and yet there is a strange personification of the bull in the foreground. His expression is the most defined, particularly when contrasted with the doll like acrobats in the background. I see the figures in the space as having an animated quality that makes one think of toys rather than sentient beings. The dream like environment spins, and pushes the sky to the front of the picture plane, pulling the viewer into the hypnotic space.
