Curator’s Comments:

Gone Fishing stands out against your other idealized animal portraits for me, as the dramatic composition and value pattern puts it over the top. The splayed out wings of the bird direct the viewers’ eyes down to the pooling water, but also present the heron in a mystical, otherworldly light.  The pale blue, green and violet feathers shimmer against the blackish water within a cool theatrical color palette.   The lighter green waves within the water act as narrow reflective pools that mirror the shape of the heron’s long feathers.  The other piece within your series that I appreciate for its manipulation of the animal subject and light is Sapphire Gaze.  Rather than solely duplicating a photograph in great detail, the reflection surprises with the suggestion of a predator-prey relationship.
