Curator's Comments:

Hope Floats came up on the site today, and I wouldn’t have immediately connected this piece to the painting Got Methane that I admired many years ago. However, they share a similar approach of seducing the viewer with vibrant hues and textures to reveal a larger truth. The semi-transparent purple highlights within the bottle reveal a small amount of trapped moisture- an irony as it floats in the expansive sea. The orange cap of the plastic floating bottle perfectly “caps” the idea of an artificial sun sinking into the horizon- tragically beautiful in content and artifice against sheer natural splendor. The floral pieces adjacent to this painting on the site (Orchards, and Fulfillment) reveal direct, unencumbered studies of perfect flower specimens. I like that Hope Floats is dispersed between them. While not an overtly sententious or didactic work, it nonetheless reveals an artist intensely looking at the world around him.
