oil on canvas -- 24x30"

Enough of the ice! I was ready for a nice, warm still life! The striped tablecloth is always a challenge. I've painted it several other times. The inspiration for this one came when I found 2 more monkey candlesticks to add to my collection. And, having been on a diet for 1+ years, hot fudge sundaes are not regularly on my menu. After I finished this, I realized it symbolizes my years of struggle on the assembly line & my rotten marriage. The monkeys and ice cream sundaes represent the joys and rewards of retirement!

I found the statement that accompanies this painting irresistible!  Who knew what masquerades as a deftly painted, formal work is actually inspired by a bad marriage and hot fudge sundaes.  All joking aside, there is an overarching sweetness to the subject, and the red stripes imbue a whimsical motif.  (It reminds me of Janet Fish’s work.)  I enjoy wood-grain pattern in the stripes, as they carry the eye through the folds of the cloth.  The recurrent whirl design appears in the fudge in the glass- the reflective highlights truly showcase your expertise.  I do find that the bronze monkey candleholders don’t quite seem to fit in the space- while there are some cast shadows the overall coloration is homogeneous, with little in terms of reflected color. Conversely, the monkey holders in red outfits fool the eye as they push in and out of the space.  It really is a charming work.

Your frozen landscapes are also beautifully rendered, but I find they don’t boast the exuberance evidenced in your still life work. Aside from engaging a broader color palette, the still life arrangements are bountiful, and generous in texture and spirit.  I also enjoy the surprises in the still life ‘landscape’, pulling me into your world and reminding me of the simple joy of painting ordinary objects.
