Curator’s Comments:
How Will the Future Know Them? It’s a haunting title for a delicately pleasing image. The specimen-like arrangement of butterflies is less scientific in aesthetic, and more Victorian-era collector in the aged patina and slightly irregular configuration of circular and square containments. It occurs to me that one is missing from the top row of the rough grid. While the Tiger Swallowtail is slightly larger than its companions in the other rows of three, its placement offsets their loose pattern. I imagine the surface of the actual piece, printed on watercolor rag paper, to be soft and matte in finish. This seems to suit the organic nature of the insect bodies, and the intimacy of fragile creatures. I find this piece particularly poignant in the context of your expansive landscapes that put forth a dystopian world of beauty and decay caused by global warming.
