Curator’s Comments:

I’ve admired your accomplished photography on the site for some time now, but just came across this intriguing painting entitled I Know Who I Am.  The richly opposing complementary red and green hues stand out as the most dominant visual elements, but set the stage for a considered self-portrait that is at once personal and archetypal. I sense a psychological resistance in the gesture of the figure, as she pulls slightly aware from the front of the space, and viewer.  The large intertwined snake takes on the appearance of a thick vine in proximity to and association with the tree; and teeters between protector and threat.  The blood red garment of course has associations with universal sin, lust, blood, etc.  But the lack of flesh tints elsewhere pulls our expectation away from fully local or even symbolic color, and instead sets up a jarring and bold color duality.
