Curator’s Comments:
I’m intrigued by this new diptych, Insight/Conceal, with its suggested emphasis on interior workings of the psyche, rather than conformity of crowds or social milieus. But it doesn’t have an iconography, for me, that’s as easily read as some of your other narrative works. The left side has a Magritte-esque presentation of what looks to be a single can open to reveal interior illumination; encased within another doorway. It is arguably more energized than the right half of the painting, which suggests an individual trapped, by barbed wire, in his own thoughts. The hinged opening of the head is both playful, and yet ominously intimates a trap that can flap shut at any given moment. I find the dull expression on the person noteworthy- the bright red opening of the skull cleanly represents blood, but also projects an intense circular halo above the subject that overwhelms the expression. It suggests a sense of totality in its dominant circular form, and balances the opened lid of the can, opposite. Formally, I find myself contemplating the contrast of primary color versus light in the piece, and wonder if that’s a metaphor for the construction of objects versus thoughts.
From NY to the U.K., the most comprehensive and respected source for income & exhibition opportunities.
