Curator’s Comments:
The sweeping marks of Interlaced Rhythmic Space provide a hypnotically pleasing momentum. The burnt orange and violet secondary hues are easy on the eye; almost discordant in their persistent low chroma tones. The warm and cool notes balance each other, and seem to collide in crossing pools of color against a whitish ground. The white pigment also offers depth and complexity in the opaque areas that are woven under and over the brighter marks in the piece. I enjoy the tension of the very thin black lines. They appear calligraphic, and curl in on themselves; slowing down the crossing movement of the diagonal interlacing. While the piece initially appears peaceful, I find that with longer viewing I appreciate the aggressive nature of the marks. While the dimensions aren’t indicated, the density of the built up linear patterns draws attention to a raw physicality, and to the bodily act of painting itself.
