This painting relates the quandary artist Mark Rothko found himself in as his artistic integrity was seriously questioned by his assistant, while he was having grave misgivings about the meaningfulness of his life’s work. His fears are manifest as the black canvases grow ever larger, closing in on his darkened bent figure clinging to the shrinking red light.

To weigh ones self worth by society’s defined value scale is an unrelenting, unrepentant, loathsome distraction for all who travel the creative road.
