Curator’s Comment:

The intricate repetitive patterning in the background space of Supremacist thinkers is an unexpected foil to the gestural, animated figures.  The abstraction and distillation of form down to basic economic symbols offers the viewer a collective, holistic amalgamate of design, decoration and essential communication. Contextually, the piece speaks to archaic and non-Western motifs, particularly in the totality of the horror vacui.  I’m also reminded of Aboriginal dot paintings or Huichol yarn paintings in the hypnotic radiation of shape and color.  However, the indication of a horizon line does break from these formative traditions, and the inclusion of a sun-like shape floating just above it enhances the figure-ground relationship.  This ambiguity of space is perhaps what holds my interest in the piece.  I don’t particularly see a correlation to Suprematism, but my experience with the term in art is limited to the Russian revolutionary movement and conceptual exploration of pure geometric form. I see your work as much more organic, and archaic in its instinctive associations.
